The harvest has started

(Note to self: perhaps I overplanted the vege boxes.)

However, all the plants are very healthy and are bearing fruit (apart from the sugarsnap peas, which have already given up the ghost), even if they appear to be making a bid for freedom.

My lovely relatives (brother Ken and nephew Jacob) took up the challenge and finished ploughing up the clay field while they were here on holiday. Thanks boys.

Ploughed back garden. Note the new
composter sitting beside the garden bed.

There are dozens of tomatoes growing beautifully.

Tomato blossoms

Tomatoes!
The pumpkin vines are growing right out of the boxes ... as are the watermelon vines.

I'm expecting that we will
have butternuts to give away.

Perhaps I should think about stuffed zucchini flowers ... ?

Zucchini

More zucchini

The eggplant blossoms are very like tobacco flowers, but then, they are related. In fact, the Solanaceae family (nightshades) includes tomatoes, eggplant, and tobacco.

Eggpant blossoms

Compare eggplant blossoms (above) with ...
... this tobacco blossom. The flower of the
tobacco plant is quite beautiful,
in spite of the stickiness.

Cucumbers are still to come

The climbing beans are very healthy, but
there is no sign of beans yet. They've
outgrown the small support structures
and are now winding themselves
in and out of the fence.
All in all ... very satisfactory. Now to clean out the fish pond.
